I don’t think I’ve had it explained so clearly to me the importance of energy being made cheaper in the UK

I think you hit on a key point in your Footnote 2. IMHO, it's unrealistic for the UK to build a competitive base of data centres for general AI inference and, in most cases, it's not really all that important where the inference is run. We should focus on building out enough data centre capacity to meet our strategic needs for defence etc. and outsource the rest to a spread of other countries. Instead of trying to compete in a race we cannot win, the focus should be on getting value from AI. How can we use the technology to significantly increase productivity across the economy? How should we be educating our population to take full advantage of the coming changes? What does the future social contract need to look like?
